Communication, Language and Literacy
At Les Landes, we believe that reading, writing and communication skills are fundamental in ensuring that children are equipped for everyday life. Therefore, these skills are taught in discrete lessons but also throughout all aspects of the curriculum.
Reading
At Les Landes School, we want our children to develop a life-long love of reading. We believe that every child should read for pleasure, to a high standard and that reading can be an enjoyable and imaginative time, which can open doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. It is our intention to ensure that children read widely across fiction, non-fiction and poetry and develop the ability to read fluently and with confidence. By providing the children with a diverse range of materials, we aim to develop and enrich the level of vocabulary used by the children and encourage them to become inquisitive and independent learners.
Writing, Speaking and Listening
All children at Les Landes are provided with rich and challenging English curriculum that enables them to confidently communicate their knowledge, ideas and emotion through their writing. We want all pupils to develop a wide vocabulary alongside a solid understanding of punctuation and grammar. We believe that all good writers redraft and edit their writing over time, because of this we want children to have the skill and confidence to be able to identify areas of improvement whilst editing their work effectively during and after the writing process. With all these skills children who leave Les Landes should be able to communicate through a range of different written forms in an appropriate manner in a variety of real-life situations. Combined with the skills developed from our Philosophy for Children work, we also believe that all pupils should be able to confidently articulate their ideas and beliefs verbally in front of both their peers and others. As well as this, pupils should develop their caring, critical, collaborative, and creative (4Cs) skills to actively listen to others and be confident to challenge and build on other people’s views in a constructive, cohesive manner. By developing these skills, all children who leave Les Landes will be able to confidently and purposefully air their opinions and be part of the ‘global debate’ throughout their lives.
