Voice 21 Oracy School
We’re a Voice 21 Oracy School!
Voice 21 is the national charity that advocates for and supports schools in delivering a high-quality oracy education. In becoming a Voice 21 Oracy School, we are joining a network of over 1,100 Voice 21 Oracy Schools across the UK that are transforming teaching and learning through talk.
Why oracy matters.
Oracy is articulating ideas, developing understanding and engaging with others through speaking, listening and communication.
We actively invest teaching time into creating "talk-rich" classrooms, valuing every student voice, boosting confidence, and preparing our students for their futures.
- Speaking and listening skills are critical foundations for reading and writing.
- Students with better oral language skills are more likely to achieve the highest grades in GCSE Maths and English.
- Young people with good communication skills are less likely to have mental health difficulties.
By teaching students to become effective speakers and listeners, we empower them to understand themselves, each other, and the world around them better.
Why oracy matters at Les Landes.
Oracy lies at the heart of our values of Community, Achievement and Pride. Through purposeful talk, children learn to think deeply, communicate confidently and listen respectfully. Strong oracy helps every pupil find their voice, succeed across the curriculum and take pride in their learning and contributions
Our vision for oracy at Les Landes.
At Les Landes, we build on strong foundations: high attainment, inclusive practice, respectful relationships and a culture where pupil voice already matters. Through Philosophy for Children, Rights Respecting practice, rich reading, outdoor learning and a shared language of learning, our pupils are confident, articulate and thoughtful communicators.
Our next step is to make oracy deliberate, consistent and transformational. By embedding dialogic teaching and Voice 21 approaches across classrooms and learning spaces, we are developing a school where talk deepens thinking, vocabulary unlocks learning and every child—regardless of background or need—can participate fully.
We are becoming a community where children find their voice, use it with purpose and pride, and apply it to learn, lead and contribute, both now and in the future.
