P.S.H.E.
At Les Landes School, we are dedicated to providing an inclusive, respectful, and empowering environment where every child can thrive emotionally, socially, and mentally. Our PSHE programme, enhanced by ‘My Happy Mind,’ fosters emotional resilience, self-awareness, and positive relationships, ensuring that children are equipped to face challenges with confidence and a healthy mindset.
Guided by our core values of Community, Achievement, and Pride, we strive to cultivate a strong sense of belonging where every member is respected, supported, and included. As an IQM 'Centre of Excellence’ for inclusion and a 'Rights Respecting Gold’ school, we are deeply dedicated to promoting equality, respect, and the protection of rights for every individual.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we aim to nurture not only personal growth but also a sense of responsibility toward others, building a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
We believe in the power of Pupil Voice to shape our learning environment. By actively listening to children and empowering them to share their ideas, we ensure that their perspectives are central to the development of our PSHE programme and school community.
By embedding these principles into our daily practice, we can prepare our children to be thoughtful, empathetic citizens who make informed decisions and contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.
My Happy Mind
At Les Landes School, we are excited to share that we are now a My Happy Mind Plus School! This enhanced, award-winning programme forms the foundation of our PSHE curriculum and is designed to support children’s emotional, social, and mental development in a holistic way. Based on the latest neuroscience and scientific research, My Happy Mind Plus is a comprehensive, preventative programme that empowers children to develop essential mental health habits, resilience, and self-esteem.
What is My Happy Mind Plus?
My Happy Mind Plus is a fully integrated approach to Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE). It goes beyond simply teaching children about their emotions; it gives them the tools to understand how their brain works, develop positive habits, and face life’s challenges with confidence.
How Does My Happy Mind Work at Les Landes?
The programme is delivered throughout the year through weekly lessons, alongside assemblies and whole-school activities. It helps children gain a deeper understanding of their brains and how different parts of their brain work together to influence their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours.
How Does My Happy Mind Plus Support Our PSHE Curriculum?
My Happy Mind Plus is not just an additional programme; it underpins the delivery of our entire PSHE curriculum. Through weekly lessons, whole-school activities, and regular assemblies, we ensure that every child at Les Landes develops key life skills such as:
- Emotional resilience to manage stress and setbacks
- Self-awareness and understanding of how their brain functions
- Self-esteem and confidence through building on personal strengths
- Positive relationships by improving communication and empathy
- Resilience through goal-setting and perseverance
These core areas align directly with our broader PSHE goals and make My Happy Mind Plus a natural fit in creating a supportive, inclusive, and positive school environment.
What Will Your Child Learn Through My Happy Mind Plus?
The programme is split into five key modules, each designed to teach children critical skills for their mental and emotional development. These modules are delivered across the year and provide a comprehensive approach to PSHE:
Meet Your Brain
Children are introduced to Team HAP, a group of characters that help them understand three key parts of their brain: the hippocampus, the amygdala, and the prefrontal cortex. By learning about these parts, children are equipped to manage their emotions and reactions.- Celebrate
This module focuses on self-esteem and helps children understand their own strengths and character traits, building their confidence and sense of self-worth. - Appreciate
Through the development of an attitude of gratitude, children learn how focusing on the positives in their lives can have a significant impact on their mental health and well-being. - Relate
Effective communication and listening skills are at the core of this module. Children learn how to improve their relationships with peers and teachers, promoting empathy and mutual understanding. - Engage
This final module empowers children to build resilience by setting personal goals and learning how to persevere through challenges to achieve them.
How Can You Support Your Child’s Learning at Home?
The learning doesn’t stop at school. The My Happy Mind Parent App is a good way to continue supporting your child’s emotional and mental well-being at home. The app includes:
- Videos so you can follow along with your child’s lessons
- Breathing exercises and audio guides for relaxation
- Stories and activities to do together as a family
This extra resource helps parents actively participate in reinforcing the positive habits and skills being developed in school.
Why ‘My Happy Mind’ matters
At Les Landes, we are committed to supporting the whole child, academically, emotionally, and socially. My Happy Mind Plus is an integral part of our approach to PSHE, ensuring that all children have the tools they need to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence, resilience, and kindness. By embedding these principles into our daily practice, we are preparing children for a future where they are not just academically successful, but also emotionally intelligent and socially responsible.
A Partnership with Parents
We believe that learning about mental health and well-being is a shared responsibility between school and home. That’s why we encourage parents to engage with the programme using the Parent App and join us in supporting their child’s development. Together, we can help build the foundation for a happy, healthy future for every child.
