Modern Foreign Languages at Les Landes

At Les Landes, we believe that every child is entitled to a rich and inclusive language learning experience. In line with the Jersey Curriculum, our French provision ensures all children have equal opportunities to develop linguistic skills that enhance their understanding of the wider world.

WE see learning a modern foreign language as an important part of our children’s learning experience at Les Landes.  It fosters curiosity, broadens cultural awareness, and builds confidence in communication. Our aim is to equip children with the skills to express ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers in both speech and writing.

French in Key Stage 2

All children begin learning French in Key Stage 2:

  • In Years 3 and 4, children receive 30 minutes of French teaching per week.
  • In Years 5 and 6, this increases to one hour per week.

Lessons are carefully planned to be inclusive, engaging, and progressively challenging. They include regular revision of prior learning, the introduction of new vocabulary, and a focus on the four key skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. French phonics are introduced as essential building blocks for decoding and accurate pronunciation.

A variety of interactive and creative approaches are used — including role plays, games, songs, stories, quizzes and performances — to ensure all children feel safe, supported, and motivated to participate. These high-quality learning experiences aim to be enjoyable and accessible, helping every child grow in confidence and develop a positive attitude towards language learning.

To extend and celebrate their learning, children in Years 4 and 6 have also had the opportunity to take part in the French Eisteddfod, performing stories, songs and dialogues in front of an audience. This enriching experience helps build self-esteem, pride in achievement, and a deeper appreciation for French language and culture.

Ongoing revision and the use of “sticky vocabulary” help embed key language over time, supporting long-term retention and fluency.
